Because it is a place that has never been colonized by a western country, Thailand preserves in its cuisine certain characteristics that have not been modified throughout the years.

The amount of chilli in it serves as a barrier against any attempt of change.

The hot, acid, sour and sweet flavours blend in a dish in harmonic proportions. The use of ingredients which flavours don’t even exist in anything else, such as the kafir lemon, the ?, the fish sauce and the Thai basil gives the food a unique flavour that would be impossible to obtain if not with those ingredients.

A Thai meal consists always in a big bowl of rice with small portions of meat, fish, vegetables and seasoned sauces.

Eating is a social act and it is less likely that you will see a Thai eating by himself. That would be a sign of unhappiness.

The basic diet is the rice. A rice soup, which is delicious by the way, is breakfast. Lunch is a quick meal of fried rice with vegetables, always very spicy. Dinner is more elaborate with 3 or 4 dishes around the rice bowl. Desert is not part of the Asian culture and the meal ends with tea.

The ideal beverage to accompany a Thai meal is beer. Ice tea also goes well with it.
